I have finally managed to reproduce the problem in my test environment. It only happens if the share has the "valid users" specified and of course only if the user backend is ldap. I found this browsing around: http://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.0.23c.html Interesting part: With the changes in the 3.0.23c release, it is now possible to resolve a uid/gid, name, or SID in any direction and always obtain a symmetric mapping. This is important so that values for smb.conf parameters such as "valid users" resolve to the same SIDs as those included in the local user's initial token. I didn't have time to compile and test 3.0.23c yet. I will try to find time for that early next week. I'll report back when I know more. Have a nice weekend! The installation is going rather well alas rather slowly. I'm okay with that as I can do stuff around the house while the installer goes thru the different installation steps. My only problem is that if I'm away from the machine too long the screen goes black, just like if some screensaver had kicked in, except that I can't go back to seeing what's going on with the installer. Hitting keys (even CTRL-Fx) does seems to make a difference. Any help would be appreciated. I remember now that I had this effect when I used my KVM switch to switch to another Computer during this lengthy install time and then going back. The installer didn't accept any key presses and was going dark after a while. You don't use a KVM switch? To my defense to option was buried under a couple of menus, and while it is called "Timeout" something it was not clear it was related to my problem. Anyway, enough excuses ....
