tinysofa enterprise server 2.0-pre3
("Persistence")
technology preview
========================================================================
tinysofa enterprise server 2.0 technology preview 3, the next generation
branch of tinysofa, is now available. The aim of this release is to put
together an enterprise grade server Linux distribution with as much
infrastructure as possible onto one CD, whilst keeping the system secure
and easily manageable.
Technology preview 3 updates the core components of tinysofa 2.0, whilst
addressing feature suggestions and bug reports from the tinysofa user
community.
Major changes include an update to gcc 3.4.1, a new major version of
MySQL (4.0.20) and a new minor version of perl (5.8.4).
As well as the usual updates to the latest upstream versions, technology
preview 3 also adds freetds and ipvsadm to round out the full feature
set that is envisioned for tinysofa enterprise server 2.0.
This release is designed to gather as much community input as possible
during the design and development phase of the distribution. Therefore,
if you'd like to suggest something, please do so on the tinysofa-discuss
or tinysofa-devel mailing lists.
Please report bugs to http://www.tinysofa.org/bugs/. Please see the
tinysofa website (http://www.tinysofa.org/) for anything else.
The Wiki page for this release is at:
http://www.tinysofa.org/documentation/index.cgi?TwoPointZero
Users of tinysofa enterprise server 2.0-pre1 and 2.0pre2 should issue
an 'apt-get update' followed by an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to upgrade
to 2.0-pre3.
I hope you've enjoyed using tinysofa, and look forward to your comments.

Security Advisory #2004-013
Package name: php
Summary: Multiple Security Fixes
Advisory ID: TSSA-2004-013
Date: 2004-07-14
Affected versions: tinysofa enterprise server 1.0
tinysofa enterprise server 2.0-pre[1-3]
===========================================================================
Security Fixes
==============
Description
-----------
php:
* PHP [0] is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is
especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML.
[Issue #1]
During a reaudit of the memory_limit problem it was discovered that it
is possible for a remote attacker to trigger the memory_limit request
termination in places where an interruption is unsafe. This can be
abused to execute arbitrary code on remote PHP servers.
This problem has been assigned the name CAN-2004-0594 [1] by the
Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project, and was first
reported by Stefan Esser [2] of e-matters GmbH.
[Issue #2]
During an audit of the PHP source code a binary safety problem in the
handling of allowed tags within PHP's strip_tags() function was
discovered. This problem may allow injection of malicious Javascript
in the Internet Explorer and Safari browsers.
This problem has been assigned the name CAN-2004-0595 [3] by the
Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project, and was first
reported by Stefan Esser [4] of e-matters GmbH.

Security Advisory #2004-014
Package name: samba
Summary: Multiple Potential Buffer Overruns
Advisory ID: TSSA-2004-014
Date: 2004-07-23
Affected versions: tinysofa enterprise server 1.0
===========================================================================
Security Fixes
==============
Description
-----------
samba:
* Samba [0] is an Open Source/Free Software suite that provides seamless
file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients.
[Issue #1]
The internal routine used by the Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT
v3.0.2 and later) to decode the base64 data during HTTP basic
authentication is subject to a buffer overrun caused by an invalid
base64 character.
This same code is used internally to decode the sambaMungedDial
attribute value when using the ldapsam passdb backend.
Sites using an LDAP directory service with Samba are strongly encouraged
to verify that the DIT only allows write access to sambaSamAccount
attributes by a sufficiently authorized user.
This problem has been assigned the name CAN-2004-0600 [1] by the
Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project, and was first
reported by Evgeny Demidov.
[Issue #2]
A buffer overrun has been located in the code used to support
the 'mangling method = hash' smb.conf option. The default setting
for this parameter is 'mangling method = hash2' and therefore a
default Samba configuration is not vulnerable.
This problem has been assigned the name CAN-2004-0686 [2] by the
Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project.

========================================================================
tinysofa enterprise server 2.0 release candidate 1, the next generation
branch of tinysofa, is now available. The aim of this release is to put
together an enterprise grade server Linux distribution with as much
infrastructure as possible onto one CD, whilst keeping the system secure
and easily manageable.
Release candidate 1 updates the core components of tinysofa 2.0, whilst
addressing feature suggestions and bug reports from the tinysofa user
community.
Major changes include an update to php 5.0.0 and modification of all
packages to build under a clean chroot environment using mach.
As well as the usual updates to the latest upstream versions, release
candidate 1 also adds dmalloc 5.3.0, drbd 0.7.0, firehol 1.191,
libevent 0.8.0, openslp 1.1.5, openvpn 1.6.0, sqlite 2.8.14, ucarp 1.0
and valgrind 2.1.2 to round out the full feature set that is envisioned
for tinysofa enterprise server 2.0.
This release is envisioned to be the last release of tinysofa enterprise
server 2.0 prior to the final release. If no show stopper bugs are
found, release candidate 1 will be rebuilt and renamed as 2.0, as well
as being assigned a final release name.
Please report bugs to http://www.tinysofa.org/bugs/. Please see the
tinysofa website (http://www.tinysofa.org/) for anything else.

Users of tinysofa enterprise server 2.0-pre1 through 2.0-pre3 should
issue an 'apt-get update' followed by an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to
upgrade to 2.0-rc1.
I hope you've enjoyed using tinysofa, and look forward to your comments.
