New 2.6.16 based kernel for classic 2.0 is available for testing:

i586:

Notes:
- i586 SMP kernel doesn't support anymore pre Pentium PRO (i686)
  processors (If you really need such support please report it.)
- grsecurity userspace has not been updated and you can't use grsecurity
  without updated gradm
- this test kernel has some debug options turned on so the performance
  may not be fully comparable with 2.6.13

Or FreeBSD.  ;)

Or maybe you're asking about how to build the Linux KERNEL from source
code, and not an entire operating system.  In this case, if you have
TinySofa, get the srpm (source RPM package) for 2.6.16 mentioned in the
other post today and try building that.
